Hafting: Pine Pitch Author: Cezanne Deraymond I just read you hafting glue recipe and while not having tryed it,i feel like its not right...ok having experemented with pitch a good amount this is what i do and was taught to do, 1 get the pitch 2. heat and strain out bark, excess plant matter, pine needles ect, or start with pure pitch , and how i like to heat it is on a hot rock in a shell or soda can. after it is fully liquifyed and slowly bubbling i add temper, powdered egg shells work, ash as was listed egg shell and mullusk shell powered FINELY supposedly make the strongest, but limestone power has worked the best for me maybe because without a nice mortar and pestal its incredably hard to powder the shells to the degree needed. Its much easer to take a bastard grind file and file a limestone rock a bit leaving a fine silt like powder, then when your pitch is bubbleing stir in untill bubbleing stops. ive never measured a formula but it seems at least 1:1 pitch to powder, not by wieght tho, by size of piles. If you do this properly you will have a chunk of what seems like a very hard plastic, it wont really be sticky unless heated, body heat wont do much if you want to add a bit of flex to the pitch add a bit of beeswax...1 as far as 5 parts pitch to 1 of ash i cant see it working anywhere near as well. I stress this method just the pitch glue alone is enough to hold a decent size knife blade in by its self given a liberal applicaton |
